A 40ft standard container is bought for one reason above all others: it is the cheapest enclosed, lockable, weatherproof cubic metre you can put on a yard. At 67.7 m³ it holds roughly twice the volume of a twenty foot box, but it does not cost twice as much to buy, it does not cost twice as much to deliver, and it does not need twice the paperwork or twice the ground preparation. That is the whole commercial argument, and it is a strong one, provided the site can actually take twelve metres of steel.
