What an office canteen container is for

An office canteen container is a portable steel building with one open room that does two jobs: it is the site office, and it is the place where the workforce eats, warms up and takes its breaks. On a small or medium site those two functions rarely justify two cabins, and putting them in one saves the second delivery, the second crane lift, the second power connection and the second set of keys. This cabin is built as a steel anti-vandal unit in graphite grey, arrives fitted out, and needs only a level standing and a power connection to start work.

The room is open plan by design. An open room can be furnished as a large office with a kitchen corner, as a canteen with a desk at one end, or divided later with the optional partition into a closed office and a separate mess room. That flexibility is why the same cabin turns up on construction compounds, in depots, at sports grounds and behind event stages.

Everything in that list is present on the cabin as it stands. Options that can be added to it are listed further down; nothing there is included unless it is quoted.

What anti-vandal means in practice

The phrase is used loosely in the industry, so it is worth saying what it means here. The shell is steel, not a timber frame with steel sheet pinned to it, so there is no panel to prise off and no stud to kick through. The external door is a steel security door in a steel frame with a locking system that takes keys, not a padlock hasp. The two main windows have external steel sliding shutters that close across the glass when the cabin is unattended and lock from the inside. The three smaller windows are set high. Between them these details are what let a cabin stand on an open site or an unlit compound overnight and be found intact in the morning.

The kitchenette and why it changes behaviour

A kettle on a windowsill is not a canteen. The kitchenette in this cabin is a run of units with a sink and hot water, work surface for preparing food and space for a fridge and a microwave. That sounds ordinary until you watch what it does on a site. Breaks are taken inside, so people are back at work when the break ends rather than when the van returns from the nearest shop. Hot drinks and hot food are available in winter. Packaging goes in the bin in the room rather than across the yard. And the room where people eat becomes the room where the day is planned, so the morning briefing happens with everyone sitting down and the drawings on the table.

Heating, lighting and power

Two heaters serve the room, which for a single open space is the right arrangement: one at each end avoids the cold corner that a single heater leaves. Five 1200 mm fluorescent fittings give even light across desks and tables; they can be swapped for LED tubes when they reach the end of their life. Five double sockets are enough for computers, a printer, a fridge, a microwave and a kettle without extension leads trailing across the floor. The consumer unit is fitted and the cabin is wired; on site an electrician connects a single-phase supply under local regulations. A three-phase supply is not required for the cabin as specified.

Daylight and ventilation

Five windows in a single room give daylight from more than one direction, which matters more than window size for a space where people read drawings and screens. The shutters on the two main windows also serve as sun shading on a south-facing wall. Opening windows provide ventilation; where the cabin will be used by a large crew or for cooking beyond reheating, an extractor over the kitchenette is a sensible addition.

Options

The base cabin can be extended with the following, each priced on request:

• A partition wall with an internal door, turning the open plan into a closed office and a separate canteen
• A toilet with wash basin and water heater
• A full bathroom installation
• An additional window with an anti-vandal shutter
• An additional external door, useful when the office and canteen are separated and need their own entrances

Decide on the partition and any WC before the cabin is delivered. Both are far cheaper to fit in the workshop, where lighting, sockets and pipework can be positioned for the final layout, than on site after the floor and lining are finished.

Furnishing the room

An open room rewards a little planning before the furniture arrives. Put the desks at the end with the two large shuttered windows, where the daylight and the view of the yard are, and the canteen tables at the end nearest the kitchenette so that food and drink stay on the vinyl near the sink. A tall cabinet or a shelving unit placed across the room makes a visual divider without the cost of a partition and can be moved when the layout changes. Keep a clear route from the door to the kitchenette, because that is the path every visitor takes. Coat hooks and a boot rack just inside the door keep the working end of the room clean. Notice boards and the site plan go on the wall the desks face, so a briefing can point at them without anyone standing up.

Siting the cabin

The cabin needs a firm, level standing and access for a flatbed truck with a crane or a truck-mounted loader. Place it where the entrance faces the main working area, so that people use it, and where a water connection can reach if a WC or bathroom is on the list. A gravel apron in front of the door keeps mud out of a room where people eat. If the cabin will stand for more than a season, concrete pads under the corners and a clear fall for surface water away from the door are worth the small extra effort.

Maintenance

Steel cabins are low maintenance but not no maintenance. Wash the exterior once or twice a year and touch up chips before rust starts. Check the door lock, the shutter runners and the window seals annually. Keep the kitchenette's water heater descaled to the local water hardness. Vinyl flooring is mopped; it is the right choice for a room that sees boots and food. If the cabin stands unheated over winter, drain the water heater and the kitchenette pipework.

Delivery and collection

We work with trusted haulage companies who deliver and off-load anywhere. If you prefer to collect, the cabin is loaded onto your own vehicle by forklift at the depot. Tell us the destination, the access route and the standing when you enquire, and the quotation can cover transport and off-loading accurately. Many more containers, portable offices, toilet blocks and welfare units are available; if this office canteen container is close to what you need but not exact, say what is different and we will look for a closer match or quote the options that bridge the gap.

Can the office be separated from the canteen?

Retrofitting on site is possible but costs more.

Is there a toilet in the cabin?

Not in the base specification. A toilet with wash basin and water heater, or a full bathroom, can be added as an option. Either needs a cold water feed and a waste connection to a drain or a holding tank on site, so check that those can reach the standing before choosing the position of the cabin.
